Rex Ashley Ryan is a former American football coach and television analyst. Ryan was previously the head coach of the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills of the National Football League, while holding various coaching positions with eight other NFL and college teams. He and twin brother Rob Ryan are the son of former head coach Buddy Ryan. From an early age, Ryan aspired to follow in his father's footsteps and become a professional football coach. After spending most of his youth in Canada, he returned to the United States as a teenager, where he attended Southwest Oklahoma State University. After graduating, Ryan spent the next 22 years as an assistant coach for a variety of teams at college and professional levels. At the behest of head coach Brian Billick, Ryan joined the Baltimore Ravens in 1999 and spent nine years there. In 2005, he became defensive coordinator, then was promoted to assistant head coach of the team in 2008 .
