Charles "Lucky" Luciano is an Italian gangster, operating primarily in the United States. Luciano began his criminal career in the Five Points gang and was instrumental in the development of the National Crime Organization. Luciano is considered the father of modern organized crime in the United States when he founded the Commission in 1931, having revoked the title of boss held by Salvatore Maranzano after the Castellammarese war. He is also the first official patron of the modern Genoese crime family. In 1936, Luciano was tried and convicted of selling forced sex and running a prostitution line after years of investigation by District Attorney Thomas E. Dewey. He was sentenced to 30 to 50 years in prison, but during World War II an agreement was signed with the Department of the Navy through his partner Meyer Lansky to provide naval intelligence.
