He also played Nicholas Higgins in the North & South miniseries, Robert Timmins in the first three series Lark Rise to Candleford, and recently Mr Bates, the servant, at Downton Abbey earned him the Primetime Emmy Award for Best Supporting Actor in a Television Series and a BAFTA nomination for Best Supporting Actor.
